On March 7, 1984, Boeing-747 (AP-AYW) was operating flight PK-732 from Jeddah to Karachi. Although the flight was uneventful initially, visibility at Karachi Airport deteriorated as the aircraft reached its decision height during the approach to runway 25R. After executing an overshoot and a holding pattern, the Pilot-in-Command initially decided to divert to the planned alternate airfield in Islamabad. However, after covering 160 nautical miles and climbing to FL-290, the pilot determined there was insufficient fuel to reach Islamabad and diverted to Nawabshah instead. The aircraft landed safely at Nawabshah at 0459 PST. Due to a lack of passenger steps at the airport, the passengers remained on board during the transit period until the aircraft was refueled and returned to Karachi.
