BASIP Summer Internship Program

The BASIP Summer Internship Program is a six-week structured program designed to introduce university students to the field of aircraft accident and incident investigation. Over six weeks, interns gain both theoretical grounding and practical, hands-on experience working alongside professional investigators on a real aviation occurrence.

Program Structure

• Duration 6 weeks structured internship program
• Weeks 1–3 Classroom sessions covering regulatory, technical, and investigative subjects
• Weeks 4–6 Practical group work on a real-time occurrence, under investigator supervision

Topics Covered

• Regulatory: Introduction to BASIP, ICAO Annex 13 & Doc 9756 (Manual of Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation), Pakistan Air Safety Act 2023 & Air Safety Rules 2025
• Technical Foundations: Aerodynamics & flight principles, aircraft types & components, engine, fuel, hydraulic, electrical, avionics and autopilot systems
• Air Traffic Services & Meteorology: ATS basics & RT phraseology, separation standards & TCAS-RA, runway incursion/excursion, ADS-B, and aviation meteorology’s role in accidents
• Safety Management & Security: Safety Management System (SMS) fundamentals under ICAO Doc 9859, State Safety Program (SSP) orientation, and aviation security
• Human Factors: Crew Resource Management, decision making, fatigue and distraction, automation & mode confusion, and the HFACS/SHELL model
• Investigation Core Skills: Onsite hazard & risk management, evidence collection and chain of custody, CVR/FDR analysis, interview techniques, and coordination with SAR & maritime agencies
• Analysis, Reporting & Case Studies: Root cause analysis, safety recommendations, investigation management systems, and case studies including MH370, a runway incursion event, and a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) accident

Practical Phase: Real-Time Case Work

In the final three weeks, interns are organized into small groups and work together on an actual occurrence under the mentorship of BASIP investigators, experiencing the full investigation lifecycle — from collecting factual data and analyzing root causes and contributing factors, to drafting a complete investigation report.

The program concludes with group presentations, allowing interns to showcase their findings to BASIP staff and peers.
