On July 9, 1984, Captain S. Hashim Raza Gardezi operated scheduled Flight PK-407 from Islamabad to Gilgit using a Fokker 27 aircraft, registration AP-ALN. Upon arrival overhead Gilgit at 0643 hours, the flight crew conducted a landing approach with higher-than-normal speed while experiencing a reported 5-knot tailwind. During the landing sequence, the aircraft floated beyond the normal touchdown point, eventually making contact with the runway 2,700 feet down its length. Although standard brakes were applied after selecting ground pitch, it became clear the remaining runway was insufficient to stop the aircraft. The crew engaged emergency brakes, which brought the aircraft to a halt after it had traveled 25 feet into the paved (pucca) overrun area and an additional 5 feet into the unpaved (kucha) portion. The incident resulted in no injuries to the passengers or crew, and no immediate damage to the aircraft was reported. The aircraft was later recovered from the overrun area and pushed back to the runway using manual labor and two utility vehicles.
