On July 30, 1984, an F-27 aircraft (AP-BAL) was engaged in a recurrent training flight with an Instructor Pilot and three trainee captains. During the takeoff roll, at an indicated airspeed of approximately 80 knots, the Instructor Pilot initiated a simulated emergency by calling for an aborted takeoff due to "Electrical Failure". The trainee captain in the left seat was required to manage two simultaneous simulated emergencies: the electrical failure and a normal brake failure. Because the simulated electrical failure rendered the nose wheel steering unavailable, the pilot lacked effective directional control, causing the aircraft to pull to the right of the runway center line. To stop the aircraft, emergency brakes were applied approximately 4,000 feet from the start of Runway 30. The instructor pilot eventually took over the controls, and the aircraft came to a complete stop at the 5,000-foot mark. Although the aircraft was successfully stopped, Air Traffic Control reported smoke coming from the landing gear; a subsequent inspection revealed that all four tires had blown out during the maneuver.
