On August 2, 1984, at 1430 hours, a German Fan Trainer 600 aircraft (Registration No. DEATJ) was performing a demonstration flight at Islamabad Airport. During a final short-landing demonstration, the pilot, Captain Dietrich Seeck, attempted to touch down immediately after an arresting barrier. Realizing he was too high on the final approach, the pilot throttled back to increase his rate of descent. However, the aircraft lost height too rapidly for the pilot to compensate in time; despite opening the throttle, the engine did not respond before the wheels impacted the ground 2 to 3 feet before the barrier. The sequence of the accident and its outcomes were as follows: Collision: The left main landing gear became entangled with the straps of the arresting barrier and broke away. Ground Path: The aircraft swung to the left and traveled approximately 300 yards down the runway before coming to a stop on the fair weather strip near a pool of rain water. Damage and Injuries: The aircraft sustained major damage, but no injuries were sustained by the pilot or the passenger. Causal Factors: The investigation attributed the sudden loss of height partly to pilot error in judgment and partly to the possible encounter of a sudden downburst, microburst, or severe wind shear on finals. Disposition: After the investigation, the aircraft was dismantled and dispatched back to West Germany.
