Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 747 ah:craof.t Reg.Mark AP-BCN operating scheduled domestic passenger flight" PK-3·01 from Islamabad to Karachi. Departure from Islamabad was at 0610 hours UTC with Pilot-in-Command Capt.S'alahuddin Chughttai. The aircraft made two approaches before it finally landed on the third approach. The first attempt to land was discontinued due to high speed on the glide· path. The Second. approach was abendoned as the aircraft was not properly established on the glide slope and localiser. On the third approach the Pilot touched down late andfelt failure of braking action due to hydroplanning on the wet runway. By application of full reverse thrust, andmaximum manual braking the Pilot managed to stop the aircraft on over-run a_rea of the runway, covering approximately 500 feet beyond the end of regular runway i.e. 500 before the soft/Kutcha ground ahead. The smoke/fire was. observed by the Control; Tower to be coming out from the engines when the aircraft was beyond half way down the runway during the landing roll. The Pilot switched off the engines on the over run. Immediately after the aircraft came to a stop the pilot actuated the passengers evacuation system to evacuate 440 souls on board. During evacuation 3 passengers sustained major injuries and 17 pax minor injuries they were given first aid and sent home as reported by PIA Chief Medical Officer.
